What is it?
Trichomoniasis is caused by a type of single-celled organism, a protozoa, called Trichomonas vaginalis. Both men and women can be infected.

How you get it
By having vaginal sex with an infected person.
Symptoms
Men usually have no symptoms. Women may get a smelly discharge and find having sex and urinating painful.
Testing
A swab is taken from the vagina or penis. Trichomoniasis is rarely found in urethral smears from men.
Treatment
Antibiotics are prescribed. You must tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding; it could affect the kinds of antibiotics your doctor can safely prescribe. Male sex partners must also be treated, even if they have no symptoms.
Prevention
Use condoms and get tested (females, males) if you have sex with a different partner, or if your partner is also having sex with others.
Consequences
Trichomoniasis doesn't have major long-term effects.
