HEALTH BLOG - Testosterone is a male sex hormone that is most important. Deficiency or imbalance of these hormones can affect sexual development and fertility. One of the diseases referred to as testosterone deficiency in young men is hypogonadism.
Hypogonadism is a decrease in testicular function caused by hormonal disorders. Hypogonadism is found if found low testosterone concentrations and can occur at any age, even before birth.
Hypogonadism in puberty age can interfere with the development of a variety of secondary sexual characters. According Dr.Em Yunir, Sp.PD-KEMD, consultant metabolic endocrine, Faculty of medicine / RSCM, there are some traits that hypogonadism should be suspected in children who are in the age of puberty.
Traits, among others, have seen the growth of whiskers or fine hair, penis does not develop, the sound is not broken, and the appearance of the face is still like a child or a babby face.
"To be sure, we have to make sure whether the hormone testosterone in the blood is low or not," he said, while media seminar, Friday (15/06/2012).
By the time it happened, said Yunir, hypogonadism can be found from the period of growth in the womb, childhood (pre-puberty) and adulthood, suggesting that the clinical manifestations vary.
If occurs during growth in the womb, it would interfere with the development of hypogonadism sex organ formation. Whereas if it happened during the prepubertal, would disrupt secondary sexual signs such as body shape, penis growth, muscle, mature voice, and hair.
"Parents should be aware of the abnormalities that may occur during the period of growth and development and consultation if there is suspicion," he explained.
While adult men with hypogonadism, a common complaint is usually perceived as a decrease of libido, erectile dysfunction, decreased muscle mass and mood disorders are accompanied by a decrease in testosterone levels. Total testosterone levels below 230 mg / dl is the deadline to deliver testosterone substitution.
"In boys, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) can stimulate puberty and the development of secondary sex characteristics," he said.
Hypogonadism is not only caused by the disease in the brain or the testes, but also can occur due to certain chronic diseases such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, hypertension and type 2 diabetes. There is no increased risk of death in patients with hypogonadism, but the problem is usually more common in infertile and osteoporosis.
